Thursday Theme: Time

I've been thinking about time a lot lately. My baby is turning 5 years old in a few short days. Jaime is growing up so fast. Life is speeding by. It feels like time is my enemy these days.

Still, time is on my side when it comes to photography. The more time passes, the more I learn. Every day is a chance to master a new skill or try something new. When I first started taking pictures I felt so limited by my camera. I was afraid of it. I had no idea what all the bells and whistles were for.

Now, I feel much more confident. I see with the eyes of a photographer now. I imagine what I want the shot to look like and then try to achieve. I look for the light. I don't use the flash! I experiment with angles and composition.

So here's a little growth chart for my photography career. I got my Canon Rebel XTi for Christmas almost 2 years ago (gosh, I was still pregnant with Jaime). I had no idea how to use it. This is a shot I took outside using the Portrait mode on the camera. The flash popped up automatically.

Now I'd like to think my style has evolved. This was taken with my 50mm using only natural light and I also edited it a little in PS, sharpening her eyes and softening around the edges.

I don't know if you can tell on this website but the pictures are worlds apart as far as I'm concerned. Check out more great shots here.

I like your comment about time being on your side as you grow with you photography. I think that is a very true feeling and makes us enjoy the hundreds of pictures we mom's take of all our kids all the time. Cherished memories.

What a cutie too!She has a beautiful smile. :)

I agree! You are definitely developing your own style in just the short bit of time I've been following you!

Happy Birthday to your big 5-year old, too! Five is such a great age!

Nice improvements. They are both beautiful though. You can see her playful side in the first and her maturity in the second picture.

Does the model get any easier with age? :)

WOW! What a difference...the first photo is just adorable. I LOVE her smile! But, I can honestly see how your technique has improved. Amazing. Isn't it hard to watch them grow up so fast? I certainly can identify! :)

That second shot is amazing! I have evolved! [Not that the first was all that bed, either - it is stunning with her smile!]

Nice job. I would hope that I've improved too.
